ABB’s New Digitalization Tool

ABB unveils a new digitalization tool to assist vessels to improve efficiency, reduce fuel consumption, and cutting emissions.
Aim

ABB’s new digitalization tool helps ships kick-start their digital transformation journey to improve efficiency. Namely, ABB Ability OneBox – Marine Signals Monitoring offers shipowners a new point of entry to digitalization. Hence, providing data about ship performance to improve efficiency, reduce fuel consumption, and cut emissions.

Concept

To meet the growing market demand for a straightforward entry to digitalization, ABB has launched a new solution for collecting and recording vessel performance data onboard. Particularly, ABB Ability OneBox transfers the signals from shipboard sensors to cloud infrastructure for access and analysis by the shipowner.

Increased insight and continuous learning about the ship’s performance enable smarter decision-making to improve operational efficiency and reduce fuel consumption. Based on the information, shipowners can calculate fuel consumption and evaluate the possible need for further action. Thus, they can ensure compliance with the IMO’s EEXI and CII targets.

“With many in merchant shipping seeking a cost-efficient way to kick-start their digital transformation journey, we are delighted to add OneBox to the solutions ABB offers to market… OneBox can be implemented quickly, cost-efficiently and with minimum effort, and upgraded seamlessly to keep pace with changing digital demands. Owners with no previous experience of digitalising the operations of their vessels can gain valuable information about ship performance and transform their operational decision making onboard existing ships, for example by utilising integrated signals from the ECDIS, fuel systems, engines, and shaft power meter.”

Key features

OneBox is straightforward to install and maintain, with viability to perform commissioning either onboard or remotely. Additionally, it is future-proof, as it is compatible with any platform that allows data analysis and interpretation. Moreover, it is scalable in order to include sensors from additional equipment. ABB analytics software with real-time fleet monitoring and analysis visualizes the vessel’s operational data.

“OneBox demonstrates our commitment to supporting shipping companies with their digitalisation strategies… By continuing to provide shipowners with intelligent digital solutions, we are contributing to a smarter, greener and more efficient marine environment.”

Thoughts from the Nerd

Various sectors of the maritime industry are starting to enjoy the benefits of digitalization through various projects such as the digitalization of German ports and the digital twin technology for vessels.
In view of the above, Lloyds Register established the first standardized digital register of providers and solutions to support this uptake in technology.
